Day 1: Arrival Split

Arrive at Split Airport, continue with car hire and collect information about car rental and how to proceed on your departure day. Drive to your hotel for check-in and start exploring the outstanding city of Split. Overnight in Split.

Day 2: Split

Spend your afternoon exploring Diocletian's Palace, an ancient Roman fortress that evolved into the bustling heart of modern Split. Walk through the monumental Bronze, Silver, Iron, and Golden Gates. Visit the Peristyle Square, the palace's open-air court, and step into the Cathedral of St. Domnius, originally built as the Emperor’s mausoleum. As the sun sets, join the locals for a đir (leisurely stroll) along the palm-lined Riva Promenade, and enjoy dinner at a traditional konoba(tavern) hidden inside the palace walls. Overnight in Split.

Day 3: Split – Mostar (170km – 2.5hrs)

Leave Split and head south toward the Bosnia and Herzegovina border. Remember to have your passports and rental car green card ready for the border police. Once across the border, make your first stop at the magnificent Kravica Waterfalls. Here, the Trebižat River cascades down a 25-meter-high tufa amphitheater into an emerald-green natural pool surrounded by lush greenery. It is an ideal spot for a refreshing swim or a coffee by the water. Arrive in Mostar by mid-afternoon. Check in and head straight to the cobblestone streets of the Old Town. Walk across the world-famous Stari Most (Old Bridge), a masterpiece of 16th-century Ottoman architecture. Catch your breath at the Kujundžiluk (Old Bazaar), listening to the sound of coppersmiths at work. In the evening, dine on a terrace overlooking the illuminated bridge and sample some of their local dishes. Overnight in Mostar.

Day 4: Mostar – Sarajevo (130km – 2.5hrs)

Today’s journey covers route, widely celebrated as one of the most beautiful train and road journeys in Europe as it hugs the bright green Neretva River. Wind through the dramatic, steep limestone cliffs of the Neretva River Canyon. Your first logical stop is Jablanica, a town famous across the Balkans for its spit-roasted lamb and the historic WWII railway bridge that still sits collapsed in the river. Continue to Konjic, a town split by a beautiful 6-arched Ottoman bridge. Arrive in Sarajevo, a city uniquely nestled between mountain peaks. Dive straight into Baščaršija, the old Ottoman quarter, and see the wooden Sebilj Fountain in the main square. Continue your exploration by discovering the complex layers of Sarajevo's past. Start at the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, a pinnacle of Ottoman design, before walking just a few blocks west into the Austro-Hungarian district, demonstrating why the city is called the "Jerusalem of Europe." Stand on the Latin Bridge, the exact site where the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand sparked World War I. Take a short drive to the outskirts to visit the Tunnel of Hope (Tunel Spasa). This underground passage was handcrafted during the 1992–1995 siege and served as the city's only lifeline to the outside world.Dinner tonight must be authentic sarajevski ćevapi (grilled minced meat served in somun bread), followed by thick, unfiltered Bosnian coffee served in traditional copper sets.Overnight in Sarajevo.

Day 5: Sarajevo – Dubrovnik (260km – 4.5hrs)

Head south through the rugged mountains of eastern Bosnia and the rolling plains of Herzegovina. Your first major stop is Počitelj, an enchanting medieval stone village built like an amphitheater into the cliffs above the Neretva. Climb up to the Gavrakapetan Tower for panoramic valley views. Later, drive through Popovo Polje to Trebinje, the southernmost city. Relax under the shade of massive, century-old plane trees (Platani) in the town square with a cold drink before crossing the border back into Croatia and driving to Dubrovnik. Check into your hotel and head down to the limestone-paved Stradun (the main street) for an evening walk, watching the ancient stone buildings glow under the streetlamps. Overnight in Dubrovnik.

Day 6: Dubrovnik

Have an early breakfast and if you wish to visit city walls, start exactly when they open to beat both the intense summer heat and the crowds. This 2-kilometer (1.2-mile) loop offers uninterrupted views of the terracotta rooftops and the shimmering Adriatic Sea. Descend from the walls onto the main limestone-paved street. Admire Onofrio's Large Fountain, stop by the Franciscan Monastery (home to one of Europe's oldest operational pharmacies), and walk down to Luža Square to see the Clock Tower and Sponza Palace. Visit the Rector's Palace, a beautiful blend of Gothic and Renaissance architecture that once housed the city’s ruler. Right next door is the Dubrovnik Cathedral, famous for its gold and silver relics. Find a shaded table in one of the narrow, steep stone alleys branching off the Stradun. Try local seafood like black risotto or grilled squid. In the afternoon, you can walk to the Old Town Port and take the 15-minute ferry to Lokrum Island. This forested nature reserve is home to wild peacocks, botanical gardens, a dead-sea salt lake you can swim in, and the original Iron Throne filming location from Game of Thrones.Overnight in Dubrovnik.

Day 7: Dubrovnik – Split/Trogir (230km – 3.5hrs)

Today you can drive the famous Jadranska Magistrala (Adriatic Highway) north. This 230 km route takes roughly 3.5 hours of pure driving bliss, with constant, uninterrupted views of the blue sea and offshore islands. About an hour north of Dubrovnik, pull over at Ston, located at the gateway to the Pelješac Peninsula. Ston features the longest medieval stone fortress wall system in Europe and ancient salt pans. It is also world-renowned for its incredibly fresh, wild oysters, which you can taste right out of the water at local seafood eateries. Continue your drive past the lush, green fruit stands of the Neretva River Delta and the serene Baćina Lakes before re-entering Split. Celebrate your final evening back in Split. Take a walk up the pine-scented paths of Marjan Hill for a sweeping view of the city and the islands of Brač and Šolta. Enjoy a farewell seafood dinner in the historic, labyrinthine fishermen’s neighbourhood of Varoš. Overnight in Split.

Day 8: Departure Split

Enjoy a tasty breakfast before returning the rental car at the Split Airport and catching your return flight home.
