Day 1: Whitegate
ITALY / SHANNON / WHITEGATE (-/-/D)
This is the perfect horseback holiday for both beginners and experienced riders, right in the heart of the Irish countryside.
It includes 6 days on horseback, with a total of 15 hours of riding – a combination of trail rides and lessons.
The equestrian centre is located in rural western Ireland, just a few kilometres from the small village of Mountshannon, known for its unique monastic settlement on Holy Island in Lough Derg. Nestled in the gentle hills of the Slieve Aughty Mountains, the centre is surrounded by endless trails waiting to be explored. Heather-covered moors and vast forests invite riders to discover the area's natural beauty on horseback.
Along the way, riders will enjoy breathtaking views of the majestic River Shannon and the green fields bordered by ancient dry-stone walls steeped in history.
Each day in the saddle offers the opportunity to discover stunning and historic locations, from the ruins of an old poitín (traditional Irish spirit) maker’s cottage to Celtic dolmens – burial sites up to 5,000 years old – which can be visited directly on horseback!
Experienced riders can take part in guided daily rides, exploring a different area each time via trails, forest roads, and quiet country lanes.
Beginners will be gently introduced to the basics of horseback riding in a relaxed setting, with lessons on horse care and safe riding techniques. Naturally, they will also be able to enjoy tranquil rides through the beautiful countryside alongside their new equine friend.
If your travel dates fall between late September and early October, you’ll have the chance to visit the Ballinasloe Horse Fair, one of Europe’s oldest and most famous horse fairs.
